Why Trying To Do Everything Usually Gets You Nothing

Small group personal training hero

Have you ever tried to bite off more than you can chew before?

Many times, we can fall into the trap of thinking that in order to make an improvement in some are of our life, that we have to force ourselves to completely overhaul that area 180 degrees from where we are currently.

Let me give you an example.

Some individuals that really want to improve the way they look and feel by losing body fat, so that means that they are going to do everything they need to in order to lose that body fat – tomorrow!

Cutting calories in half overnight, fasted cardio for an hour on an empty stomach – in addition to strength training 3x/weekly – while eating vegetables at every meal and avoiding social gatherings in order to stay away from sugar.

This type of approach is not only likely to be completely unnecessary to begin to start seeing results, it’s likely to be completely unsustainable.

I think it’s important to ask the question “And Then What” when thinking through situations like these.

What if your energy levels come crashing down?
What is you can’t make it to the gym for the day because you forgot your clothes? Or you had to stay over at work?
What if the grocery store doesn’t have all of the ingredients for your new recipes and diet plan?

What happens next goes something like this. A single missed workout, or “failing” the diet by eating a holiday cookie that was offered to you means that the whole plan is ruined.

One cookie turns into six – because the diet is so rigid and didn’t allow for any deviations – so it’s pointless to try and continue. Starting over on Monday means a weekend ahead full of binging on foods that make you feel good for a few minutes because of how much shame you feel for failing – yet again…

And the cycle repeats itself.

This is a simple example of an all-or-nothing approach. And this is a mindset trap that so many of us have fallen victim to.

What you need isn’t another diet that requires an overnight overhaul.
